Music and Cognition: Why Sound Feels Like So Much More

Have you ever heard a song that transported you to a memory — a love, a loss, a moment in time? Music activates more than just our ears — it lights up our brain’s multimodal network, connecting emotion, movement, memory, and language.

In cultures like the Tuvan throat singers of Siberia or the Yoreme community in Mexico, sound becomes image, direction, and even transformation.

🎨 Composer Alexander Scriabin, a synesthete, claimed he could “see” music in color — composing with the belief that bathing the audience in corresponding colors would intensify their musical experience.

Even if we aren’t synesthetic, our brains often link sound with shape, color, and texture.
🧠 That’s why a piece of music can make you cry, dance, or suddenly remember the smell of a childhood room.
