RESONANCES — November 2025

Thanksgiving, Community, and a Brief Black Friday Window

Thanksgiving arrives before the rush of Black Friday, and I like the way these two moments sit side by side. One invites gratitude; the other invites choice. Both remind us that we are shaped by the environments we create, alone and together.

In We Are What We Listen To, I write about how music builds community at the physiological level. When we sing or listen together, our breathing synchronizes. Our heart rhythms soften into a shared cadence. Oxytocin rises. Trust becomes possible. Music creates micro-communities — sometimes for a moment, sometimes for much longer.

As we enter this week, I’m thinking about that invisible thread that connects us through sound. And I want the offers I’m opening now to carry that same spirit of connection and possibility.

Let’s step into it.

This is a short window, and it’s one of the very few moments in the year when these resources become truly accessible. If you’ve been thinking of expanding your repertoire, building your library, or strengthening your Spanish diction, this is the moment.

This week, I want to share a song that has crossed borders and centuries with unusual grace: “La Paloma,” by Sebastián Iradier.

I recorded it with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. There is something about the way this melody migrates—how it adapts to each culture it encounters—that speaks to the universal instinct to belong.

Let it accompany you through the week. It carries its own quiet kind of Thanksgiving.

Community is not an abstract concept in music. It’s a physiological event.

In We Are What We Listen To, I write about how collective musical experiences stabilize the autonomic nervous system, regulate stress, and create emotional safety. This is why choirs become families, orchestras become ecosystems, and even one shared listening moment can reshape a difficult day.

HealthGrades recently featured research showing that music can reduce anesthetic needs during surgery — and I had the opportunity to contribute to the conversation. It reinforces something I see constantly: music isn’t only an art form; it’s infrastructure for well-being.

And if you’d like to go deeper, you can find a full exploration of these ideas in my book We Are What We Listen To: The Impact of Music on Individual and Social Health — available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, in print, digital, and audiobook formats.
