La Vicuñita
La vicuñita is a Peruvian art song for voice and piano by Theodoro Valcárcel (1900–1942). Unlike several works from the same collection that use Quechua, this song is set in Spanish.
Through the image of the vicuña, the poetry becomes a meditation on love, absence, solitude, illusion, and emotional loss. Valcárcel moves between Moderato cantabile, passionate declarations, and an Andante alla manera popolare, combining lyrical vocal writing with persistent triplet figures and an active, harmonically shifting piano accompaniment. Changes of meter, tempo, and character intensify the text before the music returns to earlier material and closes with an instrumental postlude.
La vicuñita is a distinctive example of Latin American art song, bringing Peruvian imagery and references to popular musical expression into the concert-song repertoire. It belongs to Valcárcel’s landmark collection 31 Songs of the Vernacular Soul. This product includes the sheet music for voice and piano.
