Tarukita (La gacela) is a Peruvian art song for voice and piano by Theodoro Valcárcel (1900–1942). Set in Quechua with a Spanish translation, the song tells of a gacela moving through the Andean landscape, pursued across hills and ravines by the fierce condor.
Valcárcel creates a vivid sense of motion through rapid rhythmic patterns, changing meters, repeated figures, and an energetic piano part marked alla maniera dell’arpa indiana (“in the manner of the Indian harp”). Beginning Vivace, molto mesurato and later moving to Meno vivace, ma preciso, the work combines Indigenous language, Andean imagery, and references to traditional instrumental practice.
